Study and Exam Information

The National Certificate Bookkeeping Foundation qualification consists of 4 subjects:

  1. Bookkeeping to Trial Balance
  2. Computerised Bookkeeping
  3. Payroll and monthly SARS returns
  4. Business Literacy

Each Subject is divided into 3 phases. Phases I and II each has an assignment and online test, while Phase III has an assignment and final exam. The assignments form part of your PoE (Portfolio of Evidence) that you receive when you register for the ICB exam. These assignments should be submitted on the day of the exam.

Exams are written in February, May, August and November each year at dedicated ICB exam venues and dates are subject to change. You can view exam venues and dates here:

ICB Exam Timetable and Venues

*Due to COVID-19  some sit-down exams will be replaced with online exams only.  You will receive regular email updates about changes in exam dates, venues and platforms – please keep an eye on your inbox for this information.

You can enter for one or more subject at one exam sitting, depending on your progress.

Text books are reviewed yearly and new editions are valid from April each year. PoE assignments also change in April each year.
