Disasters can not be prevented, but can and must be managed. Disaster management plays a vital role in society as they cause death, damage, destruction and desperation.

This short course will enable people in a Disaster Risk environment to conduct basic disaster risk assessment, and to implement disaster risk principles in response, recovery, relief and rehabilitation.

Course content

The qualifying learner will be able to:

  • Recognising and using early warning indicators
  • Conducting basic disaster assessment to classify disasters
  • Applying resources and co-ordinating response and recovery activities
  • Implementing basic recovery and response measures and facilitate rehabilitation measures
  • Monitoring performance to ensure compliance to a plan.
  • Making decisions based on a code of ethics.
  • Conduct disaster risk assessment
  • Implement disaster risk management principles in response, recovery, relief and rehabilitation activities
  • Defining, identifying and classifying hazards
  • Identifying critical facilities
  • Determining community vulnerability
  • Defining capacity and resilience of a community
  • Compiling and interpreting a risk profile

Certification

Your IBM Certificate will indicate credits earned and outcomes covered. Credits can be used towards appropriate further study at any accredited training institution in South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho.

Entry Requirements

  • Open to all, no admission requirements but it is assumed that a learner is competent in:
    • Communication at NQF Level 3, or equivalent.
    • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3, or equivalent.

Installment Payment Options

Study material can be downloaded immediately once the Registration Fee has been paid as the first installment payment. On the Enrolment Form a payment option can be selected as from below. Installment payment is open to all and no credit checks will be done. Installment payment facilities will only be granted for collection by bank debit order.
