Subjects are the particular fields of study that are covered in a course. The subjects below make up this course and will need to be completed in order for you to complete this course.
1. Business Literacy
Designed to equip you with the basic numerical and communication skills required to operate effectively in business.
2. Bookkeeping to Trial Balance
Introducing you to source documents, the rules of double entry, subsidiary journals, the general ledger, bookkeeping for the different inventory systems and bank and creditors reconciliations.
3. Computerised Bookkeeping
It is essential that the bookkeeper be able to complete the monthly bookkeeping function on a computer. In this module you will learn how to do bookkeeping using Microsoft Office and a computerised accounting package, Pastel.
4. Public Accounting Administration
Learn about the structure of the South African Public Sector and the role of the financial management system. Get a general understanding of the legislative framework governing financial management and ethics in the public sector. You will also be introduced to income tax, payroll administration, employees tax, supply chain and credit management.

How to study this programme
The Institute of Business Management – IBM is your training provider while the ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) is the examining body. You first have to enroll with the Institute of Business Management – IBM, select an exam date and enter an exam for each module. The ICB will then send you your PoE (Portfolio of Evidence) with all the tests and assignments. Your study material will be couriered to you included in the course fee. For the National Certificate of Bookkeeping Foundation level you receive 4 learner guides and 4 PoE’s and you enter and write 4 exams.
This PoE includes 3 assignments and 2 tests that you complete during your study phase. Each PoE is submitted and assessed together with a final exam.
Once you have passed all subjects in a qualification, the qualification is awarded by the ICB and FASSET.
You will be assigned a learner assistant that will help you throughout the duration of your studies. Learner assistants may be contacted by email or telephone.

Completion of the certificate will allow you to apply for membership of the Institute of Public Finance and Auditing (IPFA) at tier 4 as a Registered Public Sector Accounts Administrator.
